The MuDrum is an easy yet super-flexible drum module capable of creating almost any drum sound, both (multi-layered) sample-based or virtual analog or any hybrid combination of that.
As everywhere in this documentation, i don't like to spend too much words on it, only the essntial. But be sure that the little text here is not respective to the MuDrum's possibilities, which are VAST!
The left side of the MuDrum shows the 12 drum pads each of which can generate a simple or complex drum sound, or even non-drum sounds!
These 12 pads are triggered by the 12 notes in the octave, independent from which octave you play in. So e.g. each E note will play the 5th pad.
Below the 12 pads there are 4 racks. Each of the 12 pads can be routed into 1 of these 4 racks.
The right side is the editor for the focused pad.
Pads
- Left-click a pad to play it. The more you play on the center, the louder the pad will sound.
- Double-click the pad name to rename a pad.
- Below each pad there are a little (M) and (S) buttons for muting/soloing that pad.
- At the bottom of each pad there is a jack. Click this jack to connect the pad to one of the 4 racks:

Racks
- The upper two slots are routed pre-fader, meaning the incoming signal passes them by 100%, while the lower two slots are post-fader meaning their volume and panning is influenced by the volume and pan controls in the middle of the rack.
- These MuDrum racks work similar as other racks in MuLab. For detailed info click here.
Right side: Focused MuPad editor
Each pad consists of 3 elements: 2 MuSampla devices (Elements 1 & 2) and a complete MUX (Element 3).
The MuSampla devices are cute little sample players. For detailed info on MuSampla, click here.
Element 3 is a different beast though.
The EDIT button opens a complete MUX, with all it's possibilities: synthesis modules, LFOs, envelopes, ... (multi)samplers, VST/i's, ... almost endless modular possibilities!
For detailed info on the MUX, click here.
Once you have mapped meta-parameters of this MUX, they will appear in these little rings
and hovering over a parameter will show itīs name and value in the text boxes above.
As you can see in the MuDrum interface, the audio from the 3 elements flows thru 3 effect slots in which you can put insert effects (like EQ, compressors, and many more...) that will affect all 3 elements.
The first of the 3 plug-in slots also receives the incoming events so you can use these events in a MUX there!
You can also set volume and pan for the whole MuPad patch as well..
Each of the 3 MuDrum elements has itīs own process On/Off LED and options button, at the left side of the elemant panel.
This means that you can save each element to itīs own preset for later reuse!
Also each MuPad patch, i.e. the combi of Elements 1,2 and 3 together with their common effects can be copied/pasted and loaded/saved separately, so you can exhange MuPad patches between different MuDrum sets, even inter-session.
All this can be done via the right-side header i.e. the MuPad header.
And of course the whole MuDrum set can also be loaded/saved as a separate patch.
This can be done via the left-side header i.e. the MuDrum header.
And all these patches can also be reused separately outside the MuDrum!
This is flexibility on the highest level!
Nota Bene:
If you would make MuDrum patches to be shared with other users, then we propose this guideline for laying out the drum sounds:
- (1) = Kick
- (2) = Rim / Perc 1
- (3) = Snare 1
- (4) = Clap / Perc 2
- (5) = Snare 2
- (6) = Low Tom / Perc 3
- (7) = Closed Hat / Tambourine / ...
- (8) = Mid Tom / Perc 4
- (9) = Half Hat / ...
- (10) = High Tom / Perc 5
- (11) = Open Hat / Ride / ...
- (12) = Cymbal
